Ambassador Xolisa Mabhongo, Department of International Relations and Cooperation Chief Director for UN Political Affairs, and US Ambassador Joseph Macmanus, met in Pretoria to discuss a range of issues, including support for IAEA projects in Africa that peacefully use nuclear technology to achieve development goals.

At IAEA there is a department or division that is responsible for technical cooperation. This isn’t exactly development assistance, but it is very similar. And the technical cooperation programs that take place, which occur here in South Africa and other countries in Africa, are meant to assist those countries in activities related to the peaceful use of nuclear energy. Of course South Africa has a large nuclear energy sector, and also a great deal of familiarity with peaceful uses techniques.

U.S. Statement to the IAEA Board of Governors

This week is an important milestone in the international community’s efforts to resolve concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear program.  On Monday, January 20, implementation of the Joint Plan of Action began.  This marks the first time in a decade that Iran has committed to take specific steps that halt progress on its nuclear program and roll back key parts of that program.”

The #IAEA works to foster the role of nuclear science and technology in sustainable development. This involves both advancing and employing knowledge to tackle pressing worldwide challenges - ensuring access to food, water and energy, fighting poverty and disease and adapting to climate change.

Last week Secretary of State John Kerry met with IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano (top photo).  The Secretary General also met with Acting Assistant Secretary H. Dean Pittman and Representative to the UN Office in Vienna and to the IAEA Joseph MacManus (bottom photo).

 Yukiya Amano, Director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently spoke at Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C. to discuss cooperation with nuclear energy treaties, nuclear program transparency and nuclear weapons disarmament to improve global security.
